The average smartphone or tablet user by now, understand what Android. They are adept at understanding not just the newer versions of it but the whole working of android as a user interface. What exactly is an android? Every individual from a young child to an adult will be able to tell you that it is a user interface that works to allow users to browse through apps, customize their phones as well as run the various software, according to personal choice.
But most of us equate android with Google and understand that Google was the creator of this OS since they are the ones responsible for developing it further as well as naming after various treats including Gingerbread, Kit Kat, and Lollipop etc.
Despite the fact that this is a Linux based OS which has not seen much success in terms of a system for PCs or laptops when compared to Microsoft, in phones as well as tablets, Android as an OS has had much success.
But, there are a lot of things that we do not know yet about Android that we should probably find out. We bring to you a list of lesser known facts about Android that we bet even some of you android app developers did not know before. Let us take a look at five such facts:
Android wasn’t developed by Google-
Even though everyone credits Google for having developed the operating system; it wasn’t them who were the brains behind it. The operating system in its initial stage was conceived and designed by Andy Rubin who is the founder of Android.
However, Rubin ended up selling the idea to the technology and software giant, Google Inc. which led to their subsequent changes and development of newer versions.
Google named it all-
Except for the initial versions which were quite uninterestingly named Android 1.0 and 1.1, all the other versions till date of the operating system are named after sweet treats such as gingerbread, jellybean, kit Kat, lollipop etc.
This was a clever marketing technique adopted by Google who gave each version their own android bot as well.
Why was Android first developed-
Although the idea of developing an OS like Android had tanked with Rubin not being able to generate sufficient funds, the idea behind the thought of developing such a tool was to make it a smooth interface for digital cameras.
When Google launched it-
Google Inc. did launch Android in November 2007 as a Linux-based operating system after seeing its large potential for smartphone users. Google had bought the idea from Andy Rubin at $50 billion.
First ever phone-
The first ever phone or smartphone to be bought which ran on an Android operating system was the HTC Dream T-Mobile G1 which was released in 2008.
